How to Avoid Getting Your Image Deleted from wikiHow
Adding images can be a great way to improve the appearance of an article or your user page. However, the wikiHow community takes great care to make sure that images added to wikiHow are compatible with our Creative Commons license. Follow the steps below to make sure that you upload images with compatible licenses and use them properly on the site.
Steps
- Make sure that your image has a compatible license. If you created the image yourself, great! Chose any license option under "Your Own Work" area of the dropdown menu when you add an image. If the image came from another source, you need to make sure that it is from a freely licensed source. Here are some helpful tips:
- Most websites and other sources of images currently use restrictive copyrights that are not compatible with wikiHow's license. If the image came from Photobucket, Tinypic, or most other places online you cannot use it on wikiHow without the creator's permission.
- You can use wikiHow's "find free images" tool to locate and import images from Flickr and Wikimedia Commons.
- Look for the copyright information on the website. If it has "© All Rights Reserved", you may not use the image on wikiHow without permission.
- Use the summary box when uploading images. The summary box is used to provide attribution for the photo. It's important to provide accurate source information so that we know where the image came from. Images that lack it may be deleted.
- If you are using an image from another source, copy and paste the image URL or source name into the summary box.
- If you created the image yourself, just type in something simple like "I created this image."
- Be sure you select the appropriate license. There are many license options that are compatible with wikiHow. Just select the license option that matches the image you are uploading.
- Read our help articles on uploading images and adding photos to articles or contact an administrator if you have any problems or questions.
Tips
- Understand that wikiHow is not an image host. Images that are not used on a user page or wikiHow article within 7 days after being uploaded are subject to deletion.
- If you took any images yourself, you can choose whatever license you like: public domain (meaning anyone can use and edit them), Creative Commons by Attribution (anyone can use but they need to give credit to you when they use it), and Non-Commercial/Share-Alike (anyone can share the image, but not for commercial purposes, and any reuse of the image needs to have the same or a similar license to it).
- Unlicensed images, images without proper source information and images with inappropriate content are subject to deletion between 7-14 days after being uploaded.
- If you get permission from a person to use her image(s), you'll need to forward a copy of the email to permissions -at- wikihow.com.
