How to Create a Safe Room in Preparation for Disaster

Lets face it. We all might be caught off guard with a disaster some time or another, but what's even worse, is when your caught off guard and you have no place to run. This will work if you have a sturdy, middle to small room upstairs and maybe downstairs. That way it will work for almost everything

Steps

  • Select a room.A room on the top floor will help in gas attack, while a one on the lower floor can help in strong winds, etc.
  • Figure out how long you think you are going to live here. As a general guideline:
    • Tornado- You could be stuck up to a week
    • Hurricane- Prepare for up to two weeks.
    • Earthquake- three weeks.
    • Raid- depends on who is raiding with what(armed robber, people with a tank).
  • Get the things you need.(See things you need section).
  • Block the windows with sand still in its original packaging, with another plastic bag around them. This will help in a nuclear attack and/or flooding
  • Store lots of water, preferably in five liter form
  • Put some canned/dried food in a cabinet.
  • Put together a first-aid kit and a go-bag.
  • If you have pets, don't forget a couple of bottles of water for them, pet food, toys, bowls, etc.

Tips

  • Keep a fire extinguisher in and just outside the room. they can suppress small fires
  • Keep SOME of your supplies in a box or new dustbin. They can be useful in a evacuation
  • NOAA radios are very helpful in weather events.

Warnings

  • This room does not guarantee survival.
  • Always evacuate if it is mandatory.
